Nokia MixRadio - one of the first, personal music streaming apps out there. Created by Nokia, sold onto Microsoft and then Line - the largest social media platform in Asia with over 700 million users.
UI/UX & motion graphics
My time at Nokia & Microsoft Mixradio gave me opportunity to work in the global marketing and the central design department.
Using Salesforce data, the onboarding screens (which were originally created as an MVP) were not performing as well as anticipated. The task was to enhance and increase user subscription – to click through to the paid-for version of MixRadio.
I worked on many design-related challenges whilst at Nokia and Microsoft. Onboarding new customers was an integral part of attaining and retaining customers within the first week of sign-up.
MixRadio offered a free version of the music service with adverts and a £9.99 monthly version without adverts. Once listeners sign-up for their free account, they are 22% more likely to continue with the product and go onto the paid-for version as they invest their time and personalise the product.
Working in a small team of product, UX and developers, I produced a concept which served up content highlighting features taken from the latest build of the product. The video was streamed on the initial onboarding experience and then removed after the customer went on to sign-up for a free account.
The intial concept in the early build did not offer personalised features and the engagement and conversions for new customers was low.
When starting on new features, I always research competitors' approach to similiar tasks to look for significant pros and cons to condsider in the design.
Using Salesforce data analytics we were able to gain insight to how many customers signed in with SSO then clicked through to upgrade their account.
When looking at the launched version (V.1) of the onboarding experience versus the newer onboarding experience, the uptake on new users who clicked through to upgrade the music app increasd by 8%.
• 8.3% users clicked through to create a paid for account (4-6% considered good).
I always sketch out my ideas first and collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to capture thoughts and ideas.
This onboarding experience was built in the main MixRadio app. The onboarding video component was removed after the next app update.
